Half Our Deen’s 2nd Anniversary!

Half our Deen turned 2 last week and we couldn’t be more excited! In fact, here is what Baba Ali himself has to say about this amazing milestone:

Since Half Our Deen launched in July 2010, no other Muslim Matchmaking site has been able to match the two features that we are known for; our Privacy and Price. With over 2200 active member using the site and over 320 success stories, Half Our Deen is one of the most successful Muslim Matchmaking sites on the net. It’s hard to believe so many success stories have come in just two years. Alhamdulilillah”

Two years ago we set out to create a Muslim Matrimonial website that was unlike anything else out there. We put our trust in Allah (swt), and made duaa it would be a successful means of bringing Muslims into healthy and happy marriages. While, we hoped for a great outcome we were happily surprised by how great of a response we had.

By the grace of Allah (swt), in this past year alone our number of matches have more than doubled to over 300, with new matches being made daily. The average time for a match to be found has also gone down to between 3-6 months. And with the number of active users at over 2200 and growing each day that time frame is bound to go down!

This past year has also been a productive one for us at Half Our Deen. Alhamdulillah, we were able to revamp and improve the website. We hoped to make it more visually appealing and functional for our users. So far the feedback we have received has been extremely positive. However, we are always looking for ways to make your matrimonial experience more convenient so if you have a suggestion on how we can improve make sure to let us know!

A new year of development is ahead of us and we couldn’t be more excited for what we have planned for this year. We couldn’t be happier that Ramadan is kicking off our new year. Ramadan is the perfect time for us to go back and re-evaluate our intentions and turn to Allah (swt) in duaa asking for his assistance in our our endeavours.

Ramadan is also an excellent time for all you out there searching for your other half! It’s a blessed time of renewal where duaas are accepted. It’s the time for you to turn to Allah in the middle of the night and ask for every specific thing you could dream of in a spouse and inshaAllah it will be granted to you when the time is right.

It is also the perfect time to break bad habits and build good ones With the hustle and bustle of normal life it is easy to continuously put off these goals of improvement. Ramadan, helps put what is important into perspective and gives you that extra push you need to start on your journey of betterment.

May Allah swt make this Ramdan a blessed and fulfilling one for all of us. Aameen!

Keepin’ it Halal with Muslim Matrimony Sites

“You joined a matchmaking website??! Don’t you know those things are like super haram?!”. This is a common response that a lot of people might get if they went around telling their friends they joined Half Our Deen, a Muslim Matrimony site. And, had they joined any other matchmaking website that statement probably would have some truth to it. You know, with all the pictures and physical stats on profiles and lack of any REAL information about the individuals. Not to mention the chat features. It’s more like a social network than a place  to actually find a spouse!

One of the ways that Half Our Deen distinguishes itself from other online matchmaking websites is by taking precautions to remain a safe, Islamic, environment. We have insured that only brothers and sisters who are seriously seeking a spouse have access to profiles. We have also set up detailed compatibility tests and offered the option of adding your own questions so it is easy to screen potential spouses without spending hours in conversation.

However, once you have found a good match it is your responsibility to keep it halal. Islamically, there is nothing wrong with getting to know your potential spouse. Infact, it is recommended. There are conditions when it comes to interacting with them, though. So, what are  some of the ways you can make sure you’re keeping it halal?

1) Stick to relevant topics such as understanding financial situations, where you’d live if you married, the role of your families in your life, the parenting style you’d like to implement, the types of activities you enjoy and any other topic that would affect your lives together.

2) Have a third party aware of and included in your correspondence. Knowing that someone else is reading what you type is sure way to avoid being flirtatious or going off topic.

3) Get the wali involved as soon as possible. You might think that bringing up the wali will make you seem pushy or that you’re moving too fast. In reality, it will make the other person respect you and realize that you are 100% serious.

4) Make sure you are corresponding because you need to and not because you want to. If you find yourself making up excuses to email the other person, spending hours chatting, and wanting to relate everything that happens during your day to them then you’re starting to tread on dangerous waters. Once emotions get involved the halal/haram line begins to blur and your decision making skills can be impaired. So take a step back, get the families involved, and move forward with the next steps to getting married.

Behind the Scenes at Half Our Deen

Here at Half Our Deen it is our goal to help the greatest number of couples find their other half. In order to do that we have a dedicated team who is constantly working to make Half Our Deen more efficient. One of the projects they we have been working on is a totally revamped and upgraded site! We are super excited about this development and hope it makes your experience on Half Our Deen even more pleasing.

The new Half Our Deen will be, not only, more appealing to look at but also includes new features and is easier to navigate. One of the upgrades that we take great pride in is added security features. Knowing that their data is private and secure is one of the biggest draws for our users. Keeping that in mind not only do we aim to maintain that security level but to increase it when possible.

As you know making money is not the main goal of Half Our Deen. Instead, the funds we have are invested back into the website to enrich your experience. While other websites might use the same template for years we believe in constantly changing for the better. Knowing that, by the grace of Allah, more than 315 couples have found their other halves on our site in just 23 months not only motivates us but also challenges us to raise the bar.

The current average time to find a match on Half Our Deen is five to eleven months. With some of our users finding there matches in as little as three! InshaAllah, we hope that by continuing to upgrade and evolve the popularity of Half Our Deen will increase and we can help even more of the Ummah find their match.

Questions you should be asking your potential matches

There are no right or wrong questions to ask when you are looking to get married. What it boils down to is what is important to you. What lifestyle would you like to lead with your spouse? What qualities in a spouse would bring out the best in you? And what things could you compromise on without compromising your happiness?

One of the unique features of Half Our Deen is that it allows you create your own questions instead of simply asking standard ones. This grants you the advantage of being able to ask about what really matters right at the start and receiving answers from potential matches on these matters before you spend hours getting to know them!  Not only does this save you from wasting time it is also one of the ways that Half Our Deen keeps our system Islamic. That way, the only time you need to begin communication with someone is when you are serious about the chances of marriage and both believe that your views of life match up!

In order to use this feature efficiently make sure to spend some time thinking about 1) What matters to you, and 2) How your spouse will fit into these points. So for example, if you are willing to relocate for your spouse but it is still important for you to maintain strong ties with friends and family back home you could ask,  “If I relocate to your area how often would we take trips to visit my family?” That way you know ahead of time what to expect.

Even questions that might not seem important are worth asking. If you’re an avid foodie who enjoys experimenting in the kitchen your best match might not be someone who is perfectly content with traditional foods and has no desire to change! So ask what their food preferences are. Or if they are more comfortable eating gluten free or organic. While these issues might seem insignificant compared larger ones such as “Would our children attend Islamic Schools, public schools, or be home schooled?”, if it’s important to you it’s still worth asking.

Verifying a potential match’s identity

In Islam we are taught to acquire as much knowledge as we can about a potential spouse in order to feel confident about the decision to move forward with the marriage. This is even more true when the potential spouse is not from our area or someone that was introduced to us by a friend or family member. So how can you be sure of someone you meet through Half Our Deen?

1) Once you are seriously considering a match ask them for the contact information of family members, friends, or even their local Imam. No one will know them better than these people and you will able to get first hand knowledge of how they conduct themselves on a daily basis.

2) Another option that people have used is by gaining information through social media. Most people have accounts on sites such as twitter and facebook and they can be a way to see who their friends are, how they speak to others, and what type of manners they have.

3) Lastly, if you want more assurance on the identity of a person you can use people search and background check websites that will tell you everything from where they have lived to what their financial status is. One of the more respected sites that offer these services is www.ussearch.com.

Another Match Made on Half Our Deen! 314 and counting….

How I met your father

To my future children. By the time you are able to read this post, I am probably in my late 30’s and still look gorgeous as ever.

This post is about a man who rocked Ummi’s world. A man whom I respect and hold on to. An amazing man who came to my life by surprise. Responsible and love his children more than his life. He loves us unconditionally. He is most proud of us although he doesn’t show it. He is our provider and our cheerleader. He is…

…your daddy.

I have met so many wonderful people. Travelled all around the world. Worked in a different country. Enjoyed every moment. I was living life. Amidst all these, I knew that there is still a missing piece in my life that I wasn’t sure what was it. I turned to Allah and did my Umrah, Alhamdulillah. It was in front of the majestic Ka’aba that I prayed and wished that Allah would lead a wonderful man to me to complete that emptiness and fulfill my deen.

How can I find myself a husband?
I turned to the world wide web for answers. Muslim matrimonial websites were my indicators. I remembered to have registered for 3 different sites. I must say I met very interesting brothers Masyaallah. Some didn’t work out. Some…almost. Some…just pain in the butt. Different individuals have different needs and expectations. Too much of expectations in fact.
But..no matter how devastated one situation after another can be, I didn’t give up. I know I have to find someone and have faith for Allah will help me.
One day when I surfed YouTube, I stumbled upon a video by Baba Ali and his matrimonial website called Half Our Deen. Knowing Baba Ali and his cool ways of giving da’wah, I thought why not give it a go. What I’ve noticed was I can’t view any of the brothers’s pictures unless I pay for the registration. Unlike other websites I’ve been to, some are free and some allowed you to view pictures prior signing up. I took out my debit card and I remembered saying ‘I’m doing this because of Allah’ and BAAM! I was registered.

Again… the process continues. In and out and after few attempts, I decided to shut down my account and just give husband hunting a rest. After a month, I checked HalfOurDeen again and I was surprised that my account was put on sleep rather than being deleted for good. Since my account was paid for 1 year service, I mustered all my strength and give it one more go.

Probably 5 minutes after, I received a message from a man that I wasn’t interested in replying at all. He messaged me before this when I had my account active. I was like ‘ Maan!, this man is damn persistent ‘ and decided to give him a chance. His name is Valentino Chavez (Vito) and the rest is history.
We talked for 7 months and I flew to the USA to meet this man of my dream. I had no idea what to expect. Whether he might be a serial killer or sex psychopath but I was sure I did the right thing. He told me, even though I would be ugly in person..he would still marry me. pffttt! (see how annoying daddy is???) I have prayed Istikharah and alhamdulillah I was sure about this man. With my parents and family’s blessing I was married by Imaam Karim Abu Zaid at Masjid Abu Bakr, Denver Colorado on March 7th, 2012.

Wow. I’m a wife??? Until now, I still couldn’t believe that I am finally… married! wooohoo!!

Married life is a new dimension. The other phase in life that you’d be tested vigorously by Allah s.w.t. Whether good or bad, just enjoy and endure it. No matter how hard the day could be..in the end you know your soulmate is waiting, arms open for you.

I am grateful that I married a super hunk awesome muslim man. A man who accepted me thoroughly. A man who introduces me to a whole new world and a new family.

I couldn’t have asked for more…except for an iMac and a craft studio 😛

Children, now you know how I met your father. In life, you have to believe in your decision and go get ’em. Be persistent and be ready to overcome any obstacles. Don’t you ever ever give up because the moment you feel that there’s no hope, all door closes and you might not get what you wanted. Have faith in Allah and Insyallah..Allah will show you the path.

and to my husband..I love you Sweetheart. May we be the best of Muslims and be a great role model for our children.

..and to Allah.. Thank you so much! You’re the best!

Looking for a spouse? Remember to pray Istikhara

As Muslims, we have been blessed with an endless list of duas. There is a dua for traveling, a dua for when it rains, even a dua for when you enter the bathroom. However, one of my personal favorites is the istikhara dua.

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) encouraged us to pray Salatul Istikhara when we are concerned about something, in order to ask for Allah’s guidance to help us see if the situation is good or bad for us. We pray two rakats, and read the istikhara dua, where we name the particular issue and ask Allah that if the situation is good for us in this life, and more importantly, the afterlife, to bring us closer to it. And should the situation be bad for us, we ask Allah to take it away from us and out of hearts, and to bless us with whatever is good for us.

And yet, so many Muslims fail to use this prayer when it comes to finding a spouse. People rely on looks, wealth, kindness, or their family’s opinion, and forget that the best of all guiders is Allah. Even if a Muslim matchmaking website says you’re 99.8% right for each other, Allah knows what we do not.

From the beginning of your search, put your feelings aside, and ask Allah for His guidance. Ask Allah whether this person is right for you and seek His help alone. It may take time, but you’ll know whether or not this a good match through His direction. Encourage brothers and sisters that you know that are looking for a spouse to carry out this prayer. You can perform istikhara up to seven times, and if a woman is unable to pray the two rakats, they can simply read the dua.

Whenever we make make dua, we should remember to ask Allah to make the things that are good for us in our religion easy and accessible for us, and that He makes whatever is bad for us in our religion very difficult, so that it is almost impossible to proceed with the bad, but the good becomes easier in the process.

We must always be sincere and genuine when making dua, and not ask with the hopes that the answer is yes, this is the one for you. Because if the person in question is not the one, no matter how we feel, Allah has a better plan, and will guide you to someone that is right for you.

Allah knows best.

Happy Birthday Half Our Deen!

On July 18th, 2011 we celebrated our first birthday. One year later, we have over 1600 members spread across 47 countries, Alhamdullilah. Our website has been blessed with 706,347 Visitors and 6,133,176 Page views Mashallah!  And the best part of it all, is the flow of over 150 matches made on HOD. The little part that Allah (swt) has given us the privilege to play in people’s lives, means a lot to us Alhamdullilah. Hearing a member tell us “because of you I found the love of my life” is absolutely priceless.

What about all the other members who didn’t find their other half? What is written for us by Allah swt, is something we cannot measure. What someone might find in a week might take another 6 months or a year to find. We’ve gotten many members try the site and give up their search after 1 month, 2 months or 6 months. There are others who feel they can’t find the perfect potential, like Neo (from the Matrix) and there is an illusion that once found they’ll live happily ever after.

Unfortunately when considering a potential spouse we measure them to this ideal formulated from fictional characters. Often these dreams we project can be blinding to our judgment of compatibility with this potential. By the time we see the light of who this person really is, we might already be approaching a divorce. It’s important to look in the mirror and realize that we ourselves are not perfect. While some do find that ideal match sooner than later, others may not, which is alright. This shouldn’t put you down or be discouraging. Rather, it should better put things into perspective for us. It really means that ALLAH swt has someone better for you. Believing in that is half the battle and the other half is comprised of patience, prayers and being grateful.

We need to practice patience and understand that there is a time for all of us and this is only in the hands of Allah. its Ramadan and we can use this month to make lots of dua’a and pray for guidance. Always remember Allah swt chooses what is best for us, even if we’re too finite to see the infinite wisdom in His Divine Decree.

The good news is there is a light at the end of the tunnel! HOD is launching many new features, based on member feedback and requests, by October Inshallah. Our new features will include:

Email match preferences:  Our new email match alert  will give you the ability to set your personalized email match preferences to receive matches via email. Its LIVE now!

Join us in making dua’a that as we embark onto our 2nd year, there is more hasanat (good) in HOD so we can see the fruits of our efforts in the hereafter InshAllah, Ameen

Jazakhallah Khairun for all your patience and support

Improved Compatibility Tests

One of the key features that makes Half Our Deen such a unique Muslim Matrimonial site, is our Compatibility Tests. Recently we brought in the help of Sister Munira Lekovic Ezzeldine, author of, “Before the Wedding: Questions for Muslims to Ask Before Getting Married”,  to helps us further improve our compatibility questions on Half Our Deen. Munira received her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at California State University, Fullerton and is also currently co-hosting an Internet radio show, Family Connection, on One Legacy Radio.  With her assistance, we have updated and improved our compatibility questions on Half Our Deen.

Changes Made:

The Personality Test has been renamed to, The Character Test. A few of the questions and answers have been reworded for clarity and accuracy as well.
The Character Test (old) has been removed and replaced by a new test, “Would you marry?”.  This test will help further identify what type of person you are looking for.

What can you do?

– Take the new, Would you Marry?, test.
– Review your answers to the other 3 tests: Character, Religious Views and Family.
– Review your new Matches, as match percentages with other members may have changed.

In order to maintain accurate compatibility percentages, it is important that you review your answers for all 4 tests to make sure they are accurate. Please do so as soon as you can. This may or may not affect your current match percentages with other members.  For this reason, we really do urge you to look over all your answers and make sure they are up to date, InshAllah.

We are constantly thinking of better ways to help you find your match and will introduce updates to existing features periodically.  This would also be a good time to take the tests you have not taken, which will help you match with other members in all 4 categories.

Help us, help you.

JazakAllahKhair

Taking Half Our Deen Further

One of the most important things I have learned, while I continue to build this Muslim matchmaking site is, you can’t grow too quickly. I know what you are thinking, the more the merrier right? This is still true, but I prefer a more steady flow of new members as pertaining to just,“Blowing up”. The main reason behind that is when you grow too fast, you lose the connection with your members. I want to be closely knitted with my members and their concerns. Being able to give a generous amount of attention to all members new and old, helps me build a relationship with them. Just yesterday, one of our customer service agents reported that another match was made on Half Our Deen.  This completely made my day and put a huge smile on my face. People ask me if I get excited like this for every match that is made on HOD? My answer, “Yes, very much so”. The little part that Allah swt has given me the privilege to play in people’s lives, means a lot to me and is a very big deal, Alhamdulillah.

Even though we have new members signing up daily and in return getting back many success stories, Alhamdulillah, our goal is to find new and creative ways of improving HOD and not just saying “its good enough”.  Recently, we sent out a survey to our members asking what we can do better.  Many of you responded with some great suggestions and feedback.  We’re excited to announce that we have already started the process of making enhancements to Half Our Deen based on your feedback.

The Poll results show that the majority of members are exclusively on Half Our Deen.  It also mentioned that the #1 reason, why they chose Half Our Deen over all the other sites, was because its Private.

Here is whats cooking at the HOD labs (based off poll results).
Matching Preferences: Members will be able to specify certain criteria to filter their matches.
New and Improved messaging system:  An improvement of our existing messaging between members.

We plan to have both enhancements finished in January InshAllah. We have improved on the loading times of all pages, fixed the test saving issue, added polls and even added a new server.  Our goal, InshAllah, is to exceed your expectations of what a matchmaking site offers and produce results. Success is only from Allah, all we have to do is put in the effort, and we are.
